Water-related diseases are of great concern in developing countries like Nepal. Every year, there are countless morbidity and mortality due to the consumption of unsafe drinking water.Life is not possible without water. About 60 per cent of the adult human body is composed of water and is essential for carrying nutrients and cleansing the body. Despite its importance in our life, most of us are unaware of the quality of water we drink every day. Many people also tend to drink less water than the recommended daily intake (about 2 litres or 8 glasses of water per day).

One of the reasons people drink less water is the unavailability of quality drinking water. Lack of clean water also affects our personal and domestic hygiene practices. While equal access to healthcare has been a major demand of modern society, the Nepali people rarely stand for the idea that each individual deserves clean drinking water.Drinking contaminated water directly causes many illnesses.

Among the many waterborne diseases, typhoid is a major illness associated with fecal contaminated water. It can spread when water or food contaminated with Salmonella typhiare is consumed. This illness is so common that Kathmandu was called an enteric fever capital of the world at one point. And the condition has not improved much yet. Our sewage lines are leaky and can easily contaminate drinking water supply. This makes us wonder when we would be able to turn on a tap, fill a glass, and drink without filtering or boiling. Can we turn this into a reality in the overpopulated capital?
