2 killed, 3 feared dead in overnight floods

Two persons died and three others are missing and feared dead in Saturday night’s floods in Khimti area of Ramechhap district.

The Chhatiwane stream, which flows in the border of Khimti and Pharpu, had swept away five houses, killing Bal Kumari Khatri, 75, and Bashu Dev Karki, 40, police said. Their bodies were recovered on Sunday. However, there was no sign of Manila Tamang, Suman Khatri and Ashok Tamang until late afternoon.

Chief District Officer (CDO) Surya Bahadur Khatri said security personnel from Nepal Army, Nepal Police and Armed Police Force were deployed to search the missing persons.He added that nine injured people were airlifted to Kathmandu for treatment.
The overnight flood also destroyed a motorable bridge along the Khimti-Betali road, disrupting the transport service. A 700-metre long stretch of the road was also washed away, cutting off many villages in the north from the rest of the district.
Twenty-six electricity poles and several hectares of paddy field were also damaged.
Police at Khimti Bazaar said floodwaters from the local Khahare stream also breached a section of the embankment, inundating the settlement and damaging at least one house.
Flood in the Khanikhola stream also damaged a part of Khimti-Khanikhola road, obstructing movement of traffic. The flood also damaged the reserve tank of a local drinking water project.

CDO Khatri said the District Natural Disaster Rescue Committee will distribute emergency relief in the flood-affected areas on Monday.
