One of the Kathmandu Ring Road Improvement Projects in the Capital is to revamp Kalanki—a busiest junction in Kathmandu—with the construction of the country’s first under-pass road.

The construction of the four-lane 800 metre long underground road has already begun and was expected to complete in two years when the project was first launched in December 2016.



A tunnel for the underpass is being dug presently.Because of the ongoing construction, Kalanki has become one of the most polluted areas in the Capital.

People passing through this junction and the local residents are hit hard not only by the dust pollution but also due to the traffic congestion.

Vehicles have been passing through the road in arbitrary manner with some of them even plying on the footpaths.

Pedestrians run the risk of being unable to insulate themselves from any consequences due to the lack of walking space as the footpaths have been encroached by continuously arriving vehicles. The misery is even worse for local households who have no option but to bear the noise and pollution endlessly.

Pushpa Kamal Dahal also known as Prachanda, is a Nepalese politician and the chairman of the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist-Centre). He has been Prime Minister of Nepal since 2016; previously he was Prime Minister from 2008 to 2009.Dahal led the CPN (M) as it launched a communist insurgency on 13 February 1996. In the ensuing civil war, more than 17,000 Nepalese died. Ultimately elections were held in 2008 and the CPN (M) emerged as the strongest party.

The Constituent Assembly of Nepal elected Dahal as Prime Minister in August 2008. He resigned as Prime Minister on 4 May 2009 after his attempt to sack the army chief, General Rookmangud Katawal, was opposed by President Ram Baran Yadav.Dahal is also widely known by his nom de guerre “Prachanda”, a name he went by during his guerrilla days. In Nepali and some other Indo-Aryan languages languages, the word Prachanda is an adjective that translates to “fierce”.

The Central Investigation Bureau (CIB) of Nepal Police has arrested Maoist leader Bal Krisha Dhungel who has been convicted of murder of Ujjan Kumar Shrestha of Okhaldhunnga. Dhungel will be handed over to the court, a police source said. “He’s been arrested as per the Apex Court’s order. However, pressure is pouring in from Maoist leaders demanding his release,” the source said. Dhungel's arrest comes after a writ filed against IGP Prakash Aryal at the Apex Court.
